Samsung Expands One UI 8.5 Beta to Galaxy S24 and Foldables

Samsung is moving the One UI 8.5 beta program to more Galaxy devices. The update is now live for the Galaxy S24 series and recent foldable models. This expansion comes after the official launch of the Galaxy S26 series.
The Galaxy S26 arrived with the stable version of One UI 8.5 last month. Samsung is now testing the same software on older hardware. Owners of the Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra can now register. The program also includes the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6.
One UI 8.5 Beta Expansion Devices
The list of eligible hardware is growing. Samsung has added nine new devices to the testing phase. This list includes flagship phones and high-end tablets.
The Galaxy S25 FE and Galaxy S24 FE are on the list. These Fan Edition models are getting the beta earlier than usual. Users of the Galaxy Tab S11 and Tab S11 Ultra can also participate. This update is currently available in India, South Korea, the UK, and the US.
Registration is open in the Samsung Members app. You must look for the beta banner to join. Slots are limited. In India, the Galaxy S24 slots filled up in less than 24 hours. If the banner is missing, the limit is likely reached.
Build and Firmware Details
The firmware for the Galaxy S24 series carries the build number S92xBXXU5ZZCD. It is a massive download. The file size is approximately 4.1GB. You should use a stable Wi-Fi connection for this.
The update includes the March 2026 security patch. This patch addresses several vulnerabilities in the kernel. It also fixes 65 security issues found in previous builds. The base of this software is Android 16 QPR2.
Installation takes about 20 minutes on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The phone gets warm during the write process to the internal storage. This is normal for a 4GB system image swap. The device restarts several times during the flash.
Android 16 QPR2
This update changes how the system handles background processes. Android 16 QPR2 has a new memory management logic. It allocates more RAM to the Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This change helps with the new AI tools in One UI 8.5.
The partition layout is different. Samsung is using a more efficient way to store system data. This frees up some space on the 256GB models. The file system remains F2FS.
The kernel version is now 6.1. It has better support for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Gen 2 chips. This is why the older S24 series can run the same features as the S26. The hardware has the overhead to handle the new code.

Photo Assist is the main highlight of this update. It has a non-destructive editing mode. You can make several changes to a photo. You do not have to save after every single edit.
The NPU handles these edits locally. The software tracks each change in a temporary cache. If you do not like a change, you can undo it. The final image is only rendered when you hit the save button. This saves battery life during long editing sessions.
There is a new feature called Now Nudge. It looks at the content on your screen. It suggests actions based on what it sees. If you have a flight confirmation open, it suggests adding it to your calendar. It uses on-device processing for privacy.
Security Protocols and Authentication Locks
Security is a major part of this beta. There is a new Failed Authentication Lock. If someone tries to unlock your phone with the wrong PIN too many times, the device locks down. It stays locked for a set period.
This feature prevents brute-force attacks. It also works with the fingerprint scanner. The software blocks all biometric attempts after five failures. You must then use your primary PIN or password.
Theft Protection is also better. It uses the accelerometer to detect if the phone is snatched from your hand. If the phone detects a sudden, fast movement, it locks the screen immediately. This prevents the thief from accessing your data while the phone is unlocked.
Connectivity and Ecosystem Features

Battery life is slightly lower in this beta build. The idle drain is 1% per hour. This is expected for early test software. The system log is active in the background. It sends data to Samsung developers. This process uses some extra power.
Known Issues and Beta Stability
This is a beta version. It has bugs. Some users report that the lock screen clock moves out of place. This happens after a restart. You can fix it by changing the lock screen layout.
Banking apps might not work. Many financial apps check for certified software. Beta builds are not certified by Google. If you rely on your phone for payments, do not install this update yet.

Display and Visual Changes
